The suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a public event in Utah is not cooperating with investigators.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox told reporters that 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson, arrested after a two-day manhunt, has not spoken with authorities since being taken into custody.

“He has not confessed to authorities. He is not cooperating, but all the people around him are cooperating,” Cox said.

Robinson is being held without bail in Utah County Jail on preliminary charges including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury. Jail officials said he is under “special watch,” housed separately from other inmates and undergoing mental health evaluations.

Authorities said Robinson’s family and associates, including a roommate and romantic partner identified as a male transitioning to female, are cooperating with law enforcement.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined. Officials said Robinson grew up in a conservative household but more recently held political views that diverged from those of his family. Investigators are reviewing online activity, digital communications, ballistics, and surveillance footage as part of the inquiry.

Kirk, founder of the youth conservative group Turning Point USA, was killed on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem. Police said Robinson accessed a rooftop overlooking the event before opening fire and fleeing the scene. He was arrested two days later.

Formal charges are expected to be filed this week, according to prosecutors.
